Sacrifice

Aloha Kakou,

When I was growing up in Hawaii, my family did not celebrate the 4th of July. We celebrated many other holidays but for some reasons Independence Day wasn’t one of them. When I became a Christian, I started to understand the meanings of some of the holidays. For example, Christmas wasn’t about gifts, but about the birth of Jesus Christ. Easter wasn’t about candies, bunny rabbits, and egg hunts but about the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

How about Independence Day? Is there a biblical significance, too? Do we celebrate Independence Day because it’s a federal holiday — a day-off, a time to barbecue and the beginning of summer? Why do you celebrate the 4th of July?

Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. (Source: Wikipedia)

Many lives were sacrificed for our independence, we give honor and praise to those that have put their lives in harms way so that we could be free.

In the New Testament, many men and women also sacrificed their lives for they believed in Christ. Their unyielding faith inspires us.

Jesus Christ sacrificed His life so that we may have freedom from the bondage of sin — life-changing freedom to live our lives with renewed minds, attitudes, actions, and thoughts. Jesus Christ sacrificed His life for us, to purify us from sins, to reconnect our relationship with God, to open the way for us to heaven with His Father (also, our Father God.)

Let’s remember Jesus, the ultimate sacrifice. For “this is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice four our sins.” (1 John 4:10)

Let’s us not just remember Jesus, but also be obedient to his teachings. (Matthew 22:35-40) (John 15:9-12)
